Borland: The end of an era

Friday, February 10th, 2006

Borland announced plans to seek a buyer for the portion of its business associated with the Integrated Development Environment (IDE), including the award-winning Borland Developer Studio (Delphi®, C++Builder® and C#Builder®) and JBuilder® product lines.

Borland to Acquire Software Quality Company, Segue Software;

Announces Plan to Divest IDE Product Lines

I remember when they went for big enterprise and even renamed themselves "Inprise" (because "Enterprise software is where the money is"). Eventually they gave up on the idea and went back to focusing on developers.

This time they seem to be burning the bridges and getting rid of the developer tools business altogether. Which is what gave them visibility - nobody thinks of Borland as anything other as great IDEs and tools. This time they won't be able to go back, unless the IDE product line company buys them back, or renames itself Borland when the current Borland dies.

Oh Borland, how we part ways. David Intersimone has his heartfelt take on this

Update 02/09:: Now that there's been time for some employees and ex-employees to chime in on this, let me point you to a couple of exchanges that caught my eye:

My opinion on it? Delphi will go on. It's very hard to kill off a development platform, especially one with such a strong following.

Nuevo estilo visual para curso de rails

Friday, February 10th, 2006

Cambié el estilo del
Tutor de Ruby on Rails

Background on Mexico City

Wednesday, February 8th, 2006

A subject
near to my heart
today crossed Digg today - some excellent aerial
shots of Mexico City
taken by Oscar Ruiz, a helicopter pilot.

I decided to open this post to add a little bit of filler
information and links, as I noticed in the comments a lot of people
don't know a lot about this city (or the country, for that matter).

By far the most common misconception of Mexico City is that of
arid and brown. Although that is true in the north, it is not true at
all where most of the population live, and it's certainly not true of
the area in and around Mexico City. Because the country is laid out
vertically, the weather is arid on the sparsely populated north, but it
quickly becomes temperate and then jungle as you travel further south.

Firefox 1.5.0.1 a must for Mac users

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

If you have a Mac and use Firefox, you owe it to yourself to upgrade. I did yesterday and it feels oh so much faster. They also fixed an annoying bug where a repositioned combobox wouldn't expand, which made many web 2.0 sites very hard to use.

Miss computing in the 70’s? Relive them in your top of the line mac

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

This is just awesome. Thanks to tack at the mac10 mailing list for pointing this out.

GLTerminal emulates a 1970’s terminal monitor, complete with flaws in brightness, warped display curvature, and flicker. It even simulates baud rate lag. And! for extra verisimilitude, the character colors can be green or amber.

Mac Zealotry and Steve’s Reality Distortion

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

So yes, I'm slowly switching to using Macs, but I won't be a zealot (and neither should you). Although I didn't write it, this is an insightful comment that reaffirms my reasons for avoiding zealotry and kool-aid drinking.

Steve Jobs is getting an awful lot of praise and recognition as of late for being a multi faceted, immensely talented CEO ... and no doubt; he is. Most of all; he is visionary. I don't dispute the deistic award bestowed upon him; "Possibly the greatest CEO in the history of the corporate world" by Businessweek magazine....

... That said there are a few things that have bothered me about Apple Computer and in particular, Apple; under Steve Jobs

Fix Your Thinking: 5 Things Steve Jobs Has Misled Us About In The Last 30 Years

I  think I'm lucky that my last bit of heavy zealotry was back in the Amiga days. Ever since I've tried to be pragmatic on products and technologies, and it's served me well.
